The Trinity of Time
① Introduction
H. Rebourseau is a traditional family-run domaine located in Gevrey-Chambertin, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Its history dates back to the late 19th century. By the period surrounding World War I, the family already owned several prestigious parcels, including holdings in Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, and various Grand Cru sites. The estate is known for its classical, firmly structured style, producing Pinot Noir built for long-term aging rather than early-drinking fruit-driven wines.
Throughout the late 20th century, the domaine continued to uphold its traditional winemaking philosophy: low yields, extended maceration, and maturation in a high proportion of older oak barrels. This approach results in wines with firm tannins, well-defined structure, and a need for patience to reveal their elegance and complexity.② Terroir Characteristics: Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most emblematic Grand Crus—around 50 hectares enclosed by ancient stone walls, first cultivated by Cîteaux monks in the Middle Ages. The vineyard shows clear soil variation from top to bottom:
-
The upper slope near the château contains more limestone and drains well, producing finer, more linear wines.
-
The mid-slope mixes clay and limestone, offering a balance of power and elegance.
-
The lower slope has more clay, giving sturdier, earthier wines.
The Rebourseau parcel is situated in one of the better-positioned parts of the vineyard, with moderately shallow soils and sufficient limestone content. The resulting wines combine Clos de Vougeot’s signature power with mineral tension and restraint. Overall, the terroir contributes dark fruit, earthy nuances, spice, and solid aging potential.
③ Style of the 1990 Vintage
1990 is widely regarded as an outstanding vintage in Burgundy—warm conditions, excellent ripeness, healthy fruit, mature tannins, and acidity that remained supportive. In this context, Rebourseau’s 1990 Clos Vougeot shows a classic expression of mature Pinot Noir:
-
Aromatics: Black cherry, dried blackberry, plum, with layers of leather, forest floor, dried flowers, and hints of truffle and cigar box that deepen with aeration.
-
Palate: Medium to full-bodied; tannins, once firm, have polished into roundness while maintaining structural grip; acidity sits toward the higher side of medium, supporting an elegant framework.
-
Maturity: After more than three decades, primary fruit has integrated with tertiary notes. Power persists, but the wine now emphasizes savory depth, mineral nuance, and spice, making it an ideal example of aged Clos Vougeot to savor for its structure and layers.
