Montrachet Legacy
① Introduction
Domaine Ramonet is one of Burgundy’s most respected white wine producers, renowned for its precision, remarkable consistency, and exceptional performance across several Grand Cru vineyards. Since its founding in the early 20th century, Ramonet has risen from relative obscurity to global acclaim through a distinctive style characterized by power, tension, pronounced minerality, and outstanding longevity.
The domaine holds prime parcels in Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, earning it the reputation of a “master of the grands crus.” Its winemaking focuses on extremely low yields, retaining bright acidity, and judicious use of oak, resulting in wines that combine concentration with restraint—a benchmark expression of white Burgundy cherished by collectors and connoisseurs.② Terroir Characteristics: Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (BBM), located in Puligny-Montrachet and covering just 3.7 hectares, is widely regarded as one of the most elegant and refined Grand Crus.
-
Soils: Shallow clay-limestone with excellent drainage, producing grapes with delicate aromatics, fine textures, and notable depth.
-
Stylistic tendencies: Compared with the power of Bâtard-Montrachet or the vertical purity of Chevalier-Montrachet, BBM emphasizes floral finesse, a silky mouthfeel, and precise mineral notes.
Ramonet’s superbly positioned parcel delivers crystalline expressions of white flowers, citrus peel, and saline minerality—favoring elegance and definition over sheer richness.
③ Style of the 2000 Vintage
The year 2000 was a ripe and harmonious vintage for white Burgundy, with moderate acidity and an approachable profile, though top estates still produced wines of depth and character.
Ramonet’s 2000 BBM shows:-
Aromatics: White flowers, honeysuckle, lemon peel, and white peach, accompanied by hints of honey, nuts, and saline limestone; with age, notes of crème pâtissière, roasted hazelnut, and subtle truffle emerge.
-
Palate: Silky and supple, with clear but gentle acidity; mid-palate balances citrus and stone-fruit flavors, while the finish reveals Ramonet’s signature minty/herbal lift and mineral salinity.
-
Maturity: After more than 20 years, the wine is at peak maturity, with fruit, oxidative nutty tones, minerality, and honeyed complexity seamlessly integrated—an elegant and composed example of mature BBM, balancing finesse with depth.
