Whispers of the Grand Terroirs
① Introduction
The 1988 Ruchottes-Chambertin from Domaine Michel Bonnefond—vinified by Christophe Roumier—is a highly coveted rarity. During the 1980s–1990s, Roumier produced the wines from this vineyard under contract, making this bottle a “hidden Roumier Ruchottes,” admired for its finesse, purity, and tension-driven structure.
Ruchottes-Chambertin sits on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, where limestone dominates. The vineyard typically yields refined, mineral, high-toned wines. Roumier’s signature precision gives the 1988 vintage a remarkable balance of structure and elegance.
1988 is a classic, firm, long-lived Burgundy vintage.
② Terroir Characteristics
Key traits of Ruchottes-Chambertin:
-
High-slope vineyard with pure white limestone
-
Very thin topsoil
-
Rapid drainage
-
Naturally produces focused, mineral, tensile wines
-
More refined and “stonier” than many other Chambertin-sector Grand Crus
Roumier enhances verticality, finesse, and aromatic clarity.
③ Style of the 1988 Vintage
1988 is structured, cool-toned, and exceptionally age-worthy.
Aromatics:
Red cherry, wild strawberry, rose, dried spices, forest floor, white pepper, and lifted minerality.
Palate:
Tense, fine, bright acidity; refined tannins with firm backbone; long, mineral-driven finish.
Maturity:
Now showing dried flowers, herbs, leather, and pronounced stone-like minerality—a classic old-school Roumier expression.
